Basic text and RTF editing
A Nothing Special Text Editor with
all of the basics and none of the bloat

About text editors
There are lots of text editors.
• Notepad++ is a good, free editor if you need to open gigantic text files.
• Notepad is a lightweight, simple editor for everyday use.
• Then there are the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-editors. Sublime, for $100.
Atom, at a stunning 300 MB or so. UltraEdit
at a whopping 200 MB and
a jawdropping $250!
Most of these editors promise the moon but they're like a jackknife with
30 blades. The developers don't know when to stop. Many claim to support dozens of
programming languages, for example. In truth they only support barebones syntax highlighting.
They also typically offer myriad panels or panes for all kinds of layout preferences. It ends up
being overkill that's not ideal for any one particular task.
JSNotepad is very simple and lightweight. Less than 1/2 MB in
size and portable. It supports basic text editing, like Notepad. But it also adds a
few handy extras:
• Configurable spellcheck
• A better Find/Replace
• UTF-8 support
• Formatting tools like Wordwrap toggle from the toolbar and automated block indentation.
• Two "XtraClips" -- basically giving you 3 Clipboards at once.
• RTF editing option
• Custom hotkeys
• Caret can be set extra-wide and any color, for better visibility.
JSNotepad supports RTF text, like Wordpad. Or it can be used for simple plain text. You can toggle between
text editor and RTF editor. RTF files can also be converted to HTML. But it doesn't get carried away. The
main point is a fast, light, simple editor for text. Just Notepad plus a few little things that should be in Notepad.
If you want to write script, HTML, C++, or another programming language, there are
good editors for those. (WEB-ED Editor provides all sorts of specialized functions for HTML and VBScript,
for example.) If you're doing coding then you don't want a plain text editor. Nor do you
want a bloated, jack-of-all-trades editor.
So the logic here is simple: Get the right tool for
specialized coding or business documents. That's not JSNotepad. JSNotepad
is the simple, free, ultra-compact editor for basic text and RTF. No big deal. Just sensible.
While many editors are bloated up to 200-300 MB, JSNotepad is less that 1/2 MB. About 1/500th the size
of bloated products! Being so simple, JSNotepad doesn't provide an installer. Just take the folder out of the ZIP file, put it where
you like, keeping all the files together in the folder. Then create a shortcut for the Desktop or Start Menu.
(Right-drag jsnotepad.exe to the Desktop and select "Create Shortcut Here".)
JSNotepad supports Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10/11. However, spellcheck
only works in Windows 8+ because Spellcheck is actually provided by Windows and the functionality doesn't exist in Windows 7.
